You Don't Say...? 2013 Terms You Should Really Know...

What is it to be relevant?  Is it to be useful to your fellow man?  Or perhaps, knowledgeable in areas of usefulness?  Either way, as individuals, many strive to be at least aware of the latest tangible events, products, technology, or phenomena as evidenced by social media.

However, for the IT professional. this is amplified 10 fold, for not only do you pride yourself on being current, by definition, it's your job to be so.  Hence, Wasabi Roll wants to assist you in doing just that.  Here are 2013's terms you should be familiar with.

2012 DA14

2012 DA14 is a near-Earth asteroid with an estimated diameter of 30 meters (98 ft.) and an estimated mass of 40,000 metric tons. Before radar imaging, estimates for the diameter were 45–50 meters.  During its 2013 close passage, the asteroid passed 27,700 km (17,200 mi) from the surface of Earth.  This is a record close approach for a known object of this size.  About 16 hours before the closest approach of 2012 DA14, an asteroid entered Earth's atmosphere above Russia, which was, however, unrelated to it because it had a significantly different orbit.

3-D printing

3D printing is a process of making three dimensional solid objects from a digital model. 3D printing is achieved using additive processes, where an object is created by laying down successive layers of material. 3D printing is considered distinct from traditional machining techniques (subjective processes) which mostly rely on the removal of material by drilling, cutting etc.

3D printing is usually performed by a materials printer using digital technology. Since the start of the twenty-first century there has been a large growth in the sales of these machines, and their price dropped substantially.

The technology is used in the fields of jewelry, footwear, industrial design, architecture, engineering and construction (AEC), automotive, aerospace, dental and medical industries, education, geographic information systems, civil engineering, and many others.

Advanced LIGO

Gravitational waves offer a remarkable opportunity to see the universe from a new perspective, providing access to astrophysical insights that are available in no other way. The Initial LIGO gravitational wave detectors completed observations at and beyond their original design sensitivity in 2007, and the data have been interpreted to establish new upper limits on gravitational-wave flux. An additional data run with the modified Enhanced LIGO detectors reached completion in 2010. The Advanced LIGO project will completely upgrade the three U.S. gravitational wave interferometers, bringing these instruments to sensitivities that should make gravitational wave detection a routine occurrence. The U.S. National Science Foundation leads in financial support for Advanced LIGO. Funding organizations in Germany, the U.K. and Australia also have made significant commitments to the project. Together with Advanced Virgo, Advanced LIGO will bring gravitational wave astronomy to maturity.

Anthropocene

The Anthropocene is an informal geologic chronological term that serves to mark the evidence and extent of human activities that have had a significant global impact on the Earth's ecosystems. The term was coined recently by ecologist Eugene F. Stoermer, but has been widely popularized by the Nobel Prize-winning atmospheric chemist, Paul Crutzen, who regards the influence of human behavior on the Earth's atmosphere in recent centuries as so significant as to constitute a new geological epoch for its lithosphere. To date, the term has not been adopted as part of the official nomenclature of the geological field of study.

Anticipointment

A gut wrenching emotion felt deep in the belly of a person unrealistically looking forward to an upcoming event immediately after the reality of extreme disappointment has replaced the anticipated happiness

Heather felt nothing but anticipointment after she was told that "her" scholarship was awarded to some nerd who never takes his nose out a text book.

Athon

A suffix extracted from marathon, occurring as the final element in compounds which have the general sense “an event, as a sale or contest, drawn out to unusual length, often until a prearranged goal, as the contribution of a certain amount of money, is reached”: walkathon; readathon .

B612 Sentinel

The B612 Foundation will use its deep-space craft to map the orbit of every potentially Earth-smashing asteroid for the next hundred years.

Carbon capture

Carbon capture involves trapping the carbon dioxide at its emission source, transporting it to a storage location (usually deep underground) and isolating it. This means we could potentially grab excess CO2 right from the power plant, creating greener energy.

Cash mob

Andrew Samtoy, an attorney at Dworken & Bernstein and member of the Bridge Builders Class of 2012 in Cleveland, OH, organized our first “Cash Mob” on November 16, 2011 The general idea is to encourage people to go into small, local businesses and spend their money, en masse, to give the business owner a little bit of economic stimulus. We’d help businesses grow, we’d make people happy, we’d get stuff for ourselves, have a great time, and maybe we’d get a drink to celebrate afterward.

Craftermath

The resulting and overwhelming mess that is left lying all about after a full day, week, or month of creative pursuits. Massive amounts of creative supplies jumbled and piled all together, all about one’s workspace, making it impossible to continue crafting until cleaned and possibly preventing any inspiration whatsoever.

Dark-matter detector

Scientists hoping to detect dark matter deep in a former South Dakota gold mine have taken the last major step before flipping the switch on their delicate experiment and say they may be ready to begin collecting data as early as February.

What's regarded as the world's most sensitive dark matter detector was lowered earlier this month into a 70,000-gallon water tank nearly a mile beneath the earth's surface, shrouding it in enough insulation to hopefully isolate dark matter from the cosmic radiation that makes it impossible to detect above ground.

Derecho

"A derecho (pronounced similar to "deh-REY-cho" in English ...) is a widespread, long-lived wind storm that is associated with a band of rapidly moving showers or thunderstorms. Although a derecho can produce destruction similar to that of tornadoes, the damage typically is directed in one direction along a relatively straight swath. As a result, the term 'straight-line wind damage' sometimes is used to describe derecho damage. By definition, if the wind damage swath extends more than 240 miles ... and includes wind gusts of at least 58 mph ... or greater along most of its length, then the event may be classified as a derecho. "

Digital pills
Digestible microchips embedded in drugs may soon tell doctors whether a patient is taking their medications as prescribed.  These sensors are the first indgestible devices approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). To some, they signify the beginning of an era in digital medicine.

“About half of all people don’t take medications like they’re supposed to,” says Eric Topol, director of the Scripps Translational Science Institute in La Jolla, California. “This device could be a solution to that problem, so that doctors can know when to rev up a patient’s medication adherence.” Topol is not affiliated with the company that manufactures the device, Proteus Digital Health in Redwood City, California, but he embraces the sensor’s futuristic appeal, saying, “It’s like big brother watching you take your medicine.”

Excalibur Almaz

Excalibur Almaz is a private spaceflight company which plans to provide a variety of deep space crewed exploration missions, micro-gravity science, and payload delivery. EA also offers Low Earth Orbit cargo and crew delivery and return.

Design and flight safety reviews are planned for 2015. According to a 2012 interview with Art Dula, the chairman of Excalibur Almaz, the Excalibur Almaz capsule is supposedly on a "very high level of technical readiness" and could be flown within 2 to 3 years. The main issue of the first manned flight of the Excalibur Almaz capsule is regulatory, according to Dula, as the VA capsule had already done 9 unmanned test flights during the Almaz program, all of which were successful. The company has competed under NASA's Commercial Crew Development program but was not selected to receive funding under any phases of it.

Facebook depression

The American Academy of Pediatrics, in a clinical report released in March, added a new disease to its lengthy roster of childhood and teen ailments. They call it “Facebook Depression,” and define it as “a depression that develops when preteens and teens spend a great deal of time on social media sites such as Facebook, and then begin to exhibit classic symptoms of depression.” In the short time since the report made its way to the public, a maelstrom has overtaken the parenting internet sites.

Fifth screen

The Fifth screen is the most recent in a historic line of communication screens. It is commonly called Digital signage or Digital Out Of Home. The Fifth Screen represents the combination of the World Wide Web and mobile 2G, 3G and 4G technologies, Internet, displays and data/media uploaded and streamed to displays placed in various public environments.

The Fifth screen is typically found in three main categories; Point of Sale, Point of Wait and Point of Transit. It is expected that millions of these screens will be deployed over the next five years in places like retail outlets, while waiting in line, and in transit (e.g. digital billboards).

The Fifth Screen represents an unprecedented new medium that requires three main elements to support it, Technology, Media and an Audience to see it. On the technology side there are three main categories that support the Fifth Screen: software, connectivity networks and hardware, displays and cameras. On the Media Side of the equation there are a number of elements that need to be considered to play proper media that is relevant in a venue that include type of network (Point of Wait, Point of Transit or Point of Sale). The audience that views the Fifth Screen is also a measured and quantifiable using AVA (anonymous video analytics) and physical counts.

Floordrobe

A form of storage for clothing which requires no hangers, drawers, doors or effort. Simply drop on the floor and you have a floordrobe.

GENI

Geni is a genealogy and social networking website. Launched on January 16, 2007, the Web 2.0 company aims to create a family tree of the world.  While family profiles are private, Geni’s mission is to create a shared family tree of common ancestors. By combining research into a single tree that users work on together, users can focus on verifying information and on new avenues of research, rather than spending time duplicating research that others have already done. Over 98.6 million profiles were created on Geni by over 5.8 million users as of December 2010. Geni was the original parent company of enterprise messaging service Yammer, which became part of Microsoft on July 19, 2012.  In November 2012, Geni was acquired by MyHeritage.

Gesture-control tech
Gesture recognition is a topic in computer science and language technology with the goal of interpreting human gestures via mathematical algorithms. Gestures can originate from any bodily motion or state but commonly originate from the face or hand. Current focuses in the field include emotion recognition from the face and hand gesture recognition. Many approaches have been made using cameras and computer vision algorithms to interpret sign language. However, the identification and recognition of posture, gait, proxemics, and human behaviors is also the subject of gesture recognition techniques.

Gesture recognition can be seen as a way for computers to begin to understand human body language, thus building a richer bridge between machines and humans than primitive text user interfaces or even GUIs (graphical user interfaces), which still limit the majority of input to keyboard and mouse.

Gesture recognition enables humans to communicate with the machine (HMI) and interact naturally without any mechanical devices. Using the concept of gesture recognition, it is possible to point a finger at the computer screen so that the cursor will move accordingly. This could potentially make conventional input devices such as mouse, keyboards and even touch-screens redundant.

Although this technology is still in its infancy, applications are beginning to appear. Flutter, a start-up in Palo Alto, California, is allowing anyone with a Mac or Windows computer and webcam to download an application that allows them to control music and video applications such as Spotify, iTunes, Windows Media Player, QuickTime, and VLC using gestures.

Gesture recognition can be conducted with techniques from computer vision and image processing.

Google Fiber

Google Fiber connections will come into metropolitan areas through multiple aggregators. From these points, fiber optic cables will branch out and run into neighborhoods and individual residences, providing FTTH (fiber to the home) service. Much of the cable will be strung on new and existing utility poles; some of it will be buried. The system is expected to provide Internet connection speeds of up to 1 Gbps (one billion or 109 bits per second) to end users, both downstream (downloading) and upstream (uploading).

Hacker hostel
From the outside, it looks like a typical California suburban home: garage, driveway, tidy yard. But walk down the path leading to the front door and you'll find your first clue that a traditional family of four does not live inside. On the front porch are dozens and dozens of pairs of men's shoes, all removed before entering in order to keep the house as tidy as possible.

ifttt

IFTTT enables customers to create and share "recipes" that fit the simple statement: "if this then that".[3] The “this” part of a recipe is a trigger. Some example triggers are “I’m tagged in a photo on Facebook” or “I check in on Foursquare.” The “that” part of a recipe is an action. Some example actions are “send me a text message” or “create a status message on Facebook.” The combination of a trigger and an action from a customer's active channels are called recipes. The service offers triggers and actions for 59 channels, such as Twitter, Foursquare, Flickr, and Box.   In June 2012, the service crossed over to the physical world by integrating with Belkin WeMo devices, allowing recipes to interact with the real world. By combining IFTTT with other services such as Yahoo! Pipes, one can build elaborate systems that enable easier consumption of content from a variety of sources

Inbox zero

Inbox Zero is a rigorous approach to email management aimed at keeping the inbox empty -- or almost empty -- at all times. Merlin Mann, a productivity expert and creator of the 43 Folders website, developed the Inbox Zero concept. According to Mann, the zero is not a reference to the number of messages in your inbox but "the amount of your brain that's in your inbox." The point is that ineffective email management negatively affects mental functioning and productivity.

The first step is processing messages already in the inbox. Mann recommends deleting all messages that have been in the inbox more than 21 days and moving the rest to a folder called "DMZ" (for demilitarized zone). Although the messages still have to be dealt with, having the backlog in a separate folder rather than the inbox makes it seem more manageable. Next, Mann identifies five possible actions to take for each message: delete, delegate, respond, defer and do.

Laser ablation

Laser ablation is the process of removing material from a solid (or occasionally liquid) surface by irradiating it with a laser beam. At low laser flux, the material is heated by the absorbed laser energy and evaporates or sublimates. At high laser flux, the material is typically converted to aplasma. Usually, laser ablation refers to removing material with a pulsed laser, but it is possible to ablate material with a continuous wave laser beam if the laser intensity is high enough.

OpenROV

OpenROV is a
Do It Yourself telerobotics community centered on underwater exploration and education. We have developed a low-cost telerobotic submarine that can be built with mostly off-the-shelf parts.
The goal of OpenROV is to democratize exploration by allowing anyone to explore and study underwater environments. The
OpenROV community is also laying the foundation for globally-connected citizen scientists to share their data and findings.

Project Glass

Project Glass is an effort from Google to develop augmented reality glasses. The concept for these glasses was introduced on April 4, 2012 on a Google+ page. The launch also included a YouTube video demonstrating the possible uses of Project Glass.

Sensastep

Sensors in an insole register a patient’s toe and heel strike and send that information to an ankle transmitter, which sends the data to an ear receiver. The earpiece vibrates against a bone behind the ear, transmitting a signal to the cochlear nerve that is registered by the brain. Sensastep could help patients with sensory and motor-skill disabilities caused by diabetic neuropathy or Parkinson’s disease, as well as those with balance problems from strokes or injuries. Compared with other assisted-walking devices, it will be convenient: The insole fits in any shoe, and the ankle and earpiece charge like a cellphone. The inventors have also developed an app to track patients’ improvement.

Smishing

In computing, Smishing is a form of criminal activity using social engineering techniques similar to phishing. The name is derived from "SMs phISHING". SMS (Short Message Service) is the technology used for text messages on cell phones.

Similar to phishing, smishing uses cell phone text messages to deliver the "bait" to get you to divulge your personal information. The "hook" (the method used to actually "capture" your information) in the text message may be a web site URL, however it has become more common to see a phone number that connects to automated voice response system.

Tactus Technology

Tactus Technology is the developer of a new tactile user interface for touch-screen devices. Tactus provides a new dimension of user interface with a fundamentally unique solution: application-controlled, completely transparent physical buttons that rise up from the touch-screen surface on demand. With the buttons enabled, users can push and type or rest their fingers as they would with any physical button or keyboard. When the buttons are disabled, they recede into the screen, becoming invisible and leaving a smooth, seamless flat touch-screen with maximum viewing area.

Tanorexic

Tanorexia is the term often used to describe a condition in which a person participates in excessive outdoor sun tanning or excessive use of other skin tanning ...;

White fanging

To purposefully force someone or something away for the overall benefit of said person or thing.

I loved her but if I hadn't "white fanged" her there would eventually be a double homicide, and she would be an orphan.

X-points

According to NASA, Jack Scudder—a researcher at the University of Iowa—has found "hidden portals on Earth's magnetic field [that] open and close dozens of times each day." Some of them are open for long periods of time.

Scudder says that these portals "create an uninterrupted path leading from our own planet to the sun's atmosphere 93 million miles away."

Called X-points or electron diffusion regions, they are located "a few tens of thousands of kilometers from Earth. The portals are created through a process of magnetic reconnection in which lines of magnetic force from both celestial bodies mingle and criss-cross through space. The criss-crossing creates these x-points.

-zilla

Suffix added to any noun to describe the biggest/baddest/meanest/nastiest of its type. Derived from Godzilla, Japan's national hero, 60's movie star, and general all around badass.
My kitty got the name "Catzilla" after he clawed up the Rottweiler from down the street.
